Emmi Pennanen is a dance artist based in Helsinki. They work as a choreographer, perfromance artist and dancer as well as an organizer, curator, writer, and teacher. In their artistic practice they look for ways of revealing the embodied dimensions of activities stereotypically referred to as mental, i.e. analytical problem solving and production of speech. They are interested in the metaphor of dance as voice, and work on transforming internallly felt reality into gripping, tender and suggestive dance. Pennanen is in an ongoing procces of exploring the embodiment of masculinity from a transqueer perspective.
As a dancer Pennanen is part of Tero Saarinen Company. They hold a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Helsinki and graduated from the Visual Culture, Curating and Contemporary Art MA program at Aalto University.
